Painting on silk can be intimidating, involving a good amount of artistic ability as well as a sizable investment in both time and money. Today's projects involved none of the above. All were cards requiring a small amount of silk, art supplied by rubber stamps and painting done with either a watercolor or silk paint marker.
Materials:
China silk, 8 momme silk or Haboti silk
watercolor markers or fabric paint pens
Gutta resist with fine tip
freezer wrap
iron
two 8" x 10" pieces of foam board
craft knife
short straight pins
note cards
spray adhesive
scissors
optional: rubber stamp*
gold stamp pad
Steps:
- Cut a small piece of silk slightly larger than the size of the desired card design and press with a warm iron to the waxed size of a piece of freezer-wrap paper. This will give the silk body and make it easier to stamp on.
- Stamp selected design onto the silk. If preferred you may draw your own design or picture. Use a pencil and draw only dark enough for you to trace over.
- Cover the stamped image or drawn design with gold resist. Be certain that all of the lines meet so the paint will not seep through from one part of the design to another. Make the border line a double width so that when you later cut out the design the fabric will not ravel.
- From the center of each piece of foam board cut two cut-out areas just slightly larger than the stamped or drawn image. Stack the two pieces and glue together. This will be your frame for stretching the stamped silk.
- Peel waxed paper from silk, and stretch the silk over the opening in the foamboard frame. Note: You may prefer to remove the freezer wrap and put the silk on the stretcher frame before applying the resist. It's a matter of choice.
- Color in all of the design and background using either rubber stamp watercolor markers or fabric paint pens for silk painting.
- When the coloring is completed, remove the silk from the frame and cut out along the outside border. Mount as desired onto a card using a light application of spray adhesive.
