Figure B
Any number of decorative effects may be achieved by applying textured papers to everyday objects. Here, Carol provides directions for covering a plate with natural paper and burlap, but this type of "second coat" can also be used on a variety of items such as a table stand, plastic fruit, or a waste basket. Moreover, these interesting papers may be reinvented as artistic yet functional place mats.

Materials:

natural paper or burlap material
plate or other item to decorate
glue mixture for natural paper: 50% white glue and 50% water
glue mixture for burlap: 60% white glue and 40% water

Steps:
  1. Use a piece of the natural paper or burlap large enough to cover one side of the plate (or other item).
  2. Wad up the paper or burlap, and soak it in the glue mixture (figure A).
  3. Remove piece from the glue mixture, and straighten it out.
  4. Stretch the paper or burlap onto the plate, using your fingers to create wrinkles if desired (figure B).
  5. Wrap excess paper or burlap over the edge and under the plate.
  6. Let the glue dry.
