Steps:
- Seek out wonderful old metal pieces such as trays, pitchers, frames, candy dishes, ashtrays, candle holders, etc. These can be found in thrift stores, at yard sales, and in your own attic.
- Clean off the surface; you may be able to clean part of the object with the proper metal cleaner. Spray the piece with metallic paint, or retouch with metallic-paint pens.
- If you want to paint some tiles decoratively, use Apple Barrel gloss enamel indoor/outdoor paint and allow them to dry for 48 hours. Bake the tiles in the oven following directions on the side of the bottle. The polka dots on the tiles in the featured project were made in complementary colors on 7/8" square and heart tiles to add a fanciful look to the project. The dots were done using a stylus; you can use the end of a paintbrush.
- Once you have established where you're going to place your mosaics, you can begin to plan color schemes. Nip pieces of china and tiles into the desired shapes.
- When working on a curved or rounded surface, use clear silicone adhesive sealer because it will grab the tile and keep it in place more effectively. For flat surfaces, the Make-It-Mosaics adhesive works beautifully.
- To make china mosaic pieces, place old china plates between layers of newspaper and lightly strike with a rubber mallet. The newspaper will help keep the pieces from flying, exercise caution with this step, by wearing safety goggles and keeping other people away from the work area. Use tile nipper to further shape pieces as desired.
- Glue on all mosaic pieces and allow to dry.
- Mixed sanded grout with small amounts of water at a time in order to achieve a fudgelike consistency. Color grout with grout colorant if desired.
- Wear rubber gloves to spread on grout, pushing the grout into each nook and cranny. Fill all spaces. Allow to set for 15 minutes.
- Use a dry cloth to wipe away most of the grout. Use a hard-bristle paste brush or old toothbrush to brush away excess grout.
- After 10 minutes, wipe away film on tiles using a soft cloth. Use the cloth to polish the pieces of tile and china.
- Seal piece with Make-It-Mosaics sealer. Touch up the metallic paint if the grout has dulled it. Metallic pens are handy for this step. Use a permanent marker to write on any message.
