Project designed by Connie Sheerin.
Materials:
polished, smooth-edge glass
clear glue - E-6000 works well
graphite paper
clear adhesive-backed paper - Contact works well
craft blade
cutting surface
stenciling tool - Use Delta's stencil applicator with alligator clip. Attach a piece of cosmetic sponge to clip to make the tool. Stencil applicator with alligator clip is available at craft stores nationwide.
scissors
Apple Barrel Color Gloss Enamel Paints
mirror
plastic "crystal" mirror hangers, frame or felt pad if using as a table centerpiece
fine-point black marker
colored pencils
two paper copies of stencil designs
Steps:
- Buy a mirror, use an old or secondhand mirror or have a piece of mirror cut to fit a certain spot.
- Pick a favorite stencil design, trace it onto paper and enlarge or reduce it to fit the mirror. Copy the reduced or enlarged design. Color in one of the design copies using colored pencils (figure A). Use the colored design as a color pattern.
- Cut out the uncolored design to create a template. Trace onto clear adhesive-backed paper using a fine-point black marker.
- Place the design on a cutting mat and use a craft knife to cut out the design (figure B).
- Choose colors of gloss paint to match glass cobble and pencil colors.
- To prepare for stenciling, use removable blue painter's tape to secure pattern into place on mirror.
- Cut sponge into small pieces, one for each color of paint. Make stencil tool by clipping pieces of sponge on alligator clip. Dab paint colors into paint then onto the template design (figure C). Cover the design twice. Allow approximately 15 minutes between coats then remove stencil. Note: The clear Contact paper will hold up time and time again for stencil use.
- While paint is drying, separate the colors of cobbles for the design. Pick out various-sized pieces of each color.
- Dab glue on each colored section on the mirror. Place the colored glass cobbles on each section, fitting them together as you would a puzzle (figure D). Allow glue to dry thoroughly.
- Use plastic "crystal" mirror hangers to display the mirror. The colors behind the pieces of glass will reflect through, creating a three-dimensional look (figure E).
Options:
- Frame the mirror, or have it professionally framed.
- Do Cobble designs around the edges or in the corners of the mirror and use it as a table centerpiece. Add candles and fresh flowers to the center part of the mirror for an exciting designer look.
- Decorate just the edges or corners or the mirror, add felt pads to the bottom and use it as a pretty tray to showcase perfume bottles in the bedroom or bath.
