Many people dislike their own handwriting and are reluctant to write on their scrapbook pages, but sometimes, it's just a matter of using the right marker or pen. Guest Suzanne McNeill offers ideas, tips and techniques for lettering, borders, journaling, and page decor using magic markers. Suzanne works magic with a sampling of markers currently on the market.

Materials:

Design Originals Better Borders book #5046

wavy rulers
off-white or pale blue paper

The Zig calligraphy pen makes wide strokes. It is great for making bold titles or for making frames.

The Sakura pigma pen with a .30 tip makes a fine line and is good for making small dash lines or hash marks. Another Sakura has larger tips and makes a slightly larger mark.

Markers are great tools for more than lettering. Use them to make fantastic borders. Try alphabet stickers combined with markers for worry-free lettering and to make strips, dots, stitch marks, polka dots, and borders.

A brush tip pen makes a softer mark and is good to use when making wavy lines or scallops. Practice with different pen tips before actually writing on the album page.

Tips for Calligraphy

  1. Use a light pencil mark to space lettering. If you can't bring yourself to mark on the actual page, write on a separate sheet of paper, cut the wording out, and glue to the page. Use a template to trace the general size and outline of the letter, then go over it freehand with a marker.
  2. Always test a small area first to be certain the ink is not going to bleed through the scrapbook pages.
  3. The angle of the pen is very important. Hold the pen almost vertically so that the entire pen tip is in full contact with the paper. It may seem awkward at first, but the result is more control while lettering. Use a permanent ink pen for long-lasting lettering.
  4. When the ink is dry, lightly erase the pencil marks.
