Steps:

  1. Cut cardboard tube to 2-1/2 inches (figure A).
  2. Cut a 2-1/2 inch wide template from a manila folder. Cut a strip from the metal sheet that template.

Designer Michelle Newman demonstrates tips and tricks for texturizing metal to create elegant and dramatic napkin rings. Here's how she does it:

Materials:
cardboard toilet paper or paper towel roll tubes
manila folder
thin metal sheets (Lefranc & Bourgeois)
paper crimper (from Fiskars)
adhesive backed foil tape
wooden tenderizing mallet
hot glue and gun
metal charms

  • Run the sheet of metal through a paper crimper (figure B).

  • Hot glue the strip of metal to the cardboard tube (figure C).

  • Add foil tape to edges as accent, then burnish using your thumb.

  • To create a base for your accent pieces, use a wooden tenderizing mallet to give texture to the metal sheets (figure D). You can also run the metal sheet through the crimper two times, inserting it opposite ways to create an overlapping pattern.

  • Cut the textured metal into an oval shape using scalloped edge paper cutters.

  • Hot glue the oval shape onto napkin holder, and then layer more decorative pieces or charms onto the oval metal shape (figure E).
