Figure D
Home-improvement expert Bruce Johnson demonstrates the steps involved in staining and finishing an unfinished kitchen armoire.

With a fresh coat of stain and some designs, this armoire is ready for duty in the kitchen (figure A). A kitchen armoire can be used to store many items and is a less-expensive alternative to new cabinets.

Materials:

medium-grit sandpaper
several Minwax conditioner, water-based stain and finish products
coarse sandpaper
variety of paintbrushes
staining pad or lint-free cloth for removing excess stain
sponge
stencil

Steps:

  1. Sand unfinished wood lightly with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe off sanding dust.

  2. Apply a thin wood conditioner as a sealer, particularly the end grains. Let dry for at least 15 minutes.

  3. Apply a water-based stain with a staining pad or lint-free rag (figure B). Work in the stain, then let dry.

  4. Go to a slightly more coarse sandpaper and lightly sand corners and other areas to give a worn, aged look (figure C).

  5. To stain knobs, put the screw in the knobs and dip in the stain while holding onto the screw. Wipe off the excess.

  6. To stencil on a design, it is a good idea to practice on a piece of scrap wood.

  7. Spray an adhesive on the back of the stencil to help the edges stick better. Apply stencil to wood.

  8. Lightly load a sponge with stain and dab onto stencil (figure D).
