Samplers should be framed under glass with acid-free paper underneath to preserve it.
"How do I sew that stitch?" Women living from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries would often find the answer to this question by looking at a needlepoint sampler (a collection of stitches and designs embroidered for hundreds of years by both women and children). There are different types of samplers, included ones with verses, phrases, alphabets and some that are just pictorials.

Today, California folk artist Patricia Hughey is rediscovering the past and making her own samplers--they are now a colorful country kaleidoscope, stitching up the past in a fresh way. She creates her own freehand designs by making her own shapes and letters and makes the samplers look old by aging the linen first in tea or coffee.
