syndee holt* from Polyform Products' The Sculpey People demonstrates how to make a polymer clay planter by molding clay around a bowl.
Materials:
clay
bowl
household drinking glass
rubber stamp (available at craft stores)
Pearl-Ex metallic powders
butter knife or other flat tool for removing clay from bowl
Steps:
- Flatten a sheet of polymer clay with a rolling pin, glass, pasta machine, etc.
- Take that sheet of clay, stretch it, and wrap it around the bowl (figure B) .
- Work seams into the design with a drinking glass.
- Wet a rubber stamp and press into clay or roll the clay-coated bowl on the stamp, and roll it slightly.
- Distress the clay by rolling the rim of the water glass on the clay for an antique look.
- Rub metallic powders on with fingers (figure C) or a paintbrush. A rubber chisel will also work. The color of the metallic powders that are chosen will dictate the overall look.
- Bake the clay-coated bowl at approximately 275 degrees (follow package directions).
- Use a butter knife or similar tool to help release the clay from the bowl. Petroleum jelly on the bowl will assist in releasing the clay after baking.
