Ice-cream cones filled with cake mix and iced to look like ice-cream cones make a fun alternative to a birthday cake for a kid's party.
Tired of the same old cake and ice cream at your children's birthday parties? Try surprising them with fun foods such as baked ice cream, polar bear pops and pretzel butterflies. Food expert Clare Crespo shows how.

Baked Ice-Cream

Ingredients:

standard cake mix, prepared
ice-cream cones (flat-bottomed variety, not waffle cone)
cream frosting in flavor of choice
decorative toppings
sprinkles, cherries or other garnishes of choice

Preparation:

Spoon prepared cake batter into an ice-cream cone 3/4 full and set on baking tray or in muffin tin. Bake at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes (use cupcake times on the back of cake mix box.) Ice with frosting (see recipe below) and garnish with sprinkles, cherries or any other topping of choice.

Cream Frosting

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
food coloring

Combine butter and sugar, then add remaining ingredients. Cream until smooth. Add in food coloring. Place icing in a pastry bag and squeeze over cones so that it looks like soft serve ice-cream. Try using a squeeze bottle (see photo at right) if you don't have a pastry bag or simply spread with a knife. Top with sprinkles, cherries or any other topping of choice.

Frozen Polar Bears use a banana body and candy for the face.
Polar Bear Pops

Ingredients:

4 firm, ripe bananas
8 wooden craft sticks
peanuts
2 cups white chocolate chips
1-1/2 Tbs. vegetable shortening
wafers
cherries
assorted small candies

Preparation:

Cut each banana in half. Insert a craft stick at the bottom and position two peanut halves at the top to look like ears and place on a wire rack. Melt chocolate and shortening on top of a double boiler. Pour mixture over the banana as it sits on the rack until it is well-covered.

To make a bear face: Place a wafer on the banana for the snout area, attaching it by adding a tiny amount of the chocolate mixture to the back of the wafer. Use a piece of cherry for the mouth, attaching with chocolate mixture.

Add a circle candy for the nose and two small candies for the eyes. Place on tray lined with parchment paper and freeze for an hour.
