Lynne is not afraid to try new things and take on new challenges. Although she started out in pursuit of a career in biology, a job with a textile designer sent her down a different path. Then, as a favor to a friend, she designed a wedding thank you card, which inspired her to start making greeting cards of all kinds, including this clever holiday pop-up card.
Materials:
pencil
tracing paper or drawing paper
soup spoon
linoleum blocks
carving tool
water-based printing ink
brayer
watercolor paper
scissors
blank pre-cut, pre-scored card
rhinestones
craft glue
cotton swab
paper cutter with scoring blade or bone folder
double-sided tape
computer with scanner and printer
Steps:
1. Draw or trace image with pencil on regular paper.
2. Transfer image to linoleum block. Put paper with image upside down on block and rub back with spoon. The carbon from the pencil drawing gets transferred onto the linoleum so that the image is now on the block.
3. Carve image out of block with sharp carving tool.
4. Roll water-based ink onto linoleum block with a brayer.
5. Place watercolor paper over block and rub the paper with a spoon. This transfers the ink onto the watercolor paper and you now have a print from the block. The print needs to dry for about 15 minutes.
6. Scan print into the computer. Fix any mistakes and change the color into what you want to print out.
7. Decide on layout for card. Add any text at this point.
8. Print out card. Also print out image that will pop up separately--this is the decorated tree cut out around edges of image with scissors.
9. Glue on small crystal rhinestones to add dimension to the card. Use glue applied with a cotton swab cut in half. Glue to both front of card and pop-up.
10. Cut out rectangle of paper to make shelf for pop-up; score and fold shelf. Connect shelf to card with double-sided tape; then connect pop-up to the shelf.
