Graphic designer Whitney Wexler has an eye for style, but when it comes to organization, she's working with one eye shut. Her passions for unconventional designs have inspired her to use her creativity to try to get organized. Unfortunately things don't always work out the way one plans.

A pink antique refrigerator in the living room was supposed to serve as a conversation piece and storage area, but over time, it has become a home for clutter.

The dining-room table was intended to double as a workspace and an everything-else space. There are so many items on it that Wexler has been forced to take her workspace to the floor.

She opted to use a butcher block as a TV stand. It has been passed around the family for years, and she refuses to get rid of it.

She built this shelving system herself and wanted it to look like it was built into the wall. She is reluctant to get rid of this piece as well.
She has decided to open her cluttered home to expert Crystal Sabalaske for help. Known for her innovative use of space, Sabalaske immediately recognizes that a lot of the clutter comes from the misuse of furniture. Wexler must sort through all of her items, including the furniture, and decide what she wants to keep and where it should go. Eventually, the larger pieces are cleared out and new ones brought in that not only look stylish but double as storage areas. Check out the results:

Her once-out-of-place refrigerator is now a focal point for her graphics magazines, notebooks, CDs and candles. It looks more like an art piece than clutter.

The dining table is ready to be used for dining! Storage space is provided by shelves above the table as well as underneath the custom-made and cushioned benches.

A new armoire houses the television and other electronic equipment, various work materials and board games. A matching magazine rack next to it provides even more storage.

The couch fits perfectly in the space where the shelving system was, and the new glass table in front of it is adjustable. It can be used as a coffee table or raised up a little for a worktable.

The butcher block got to stay but was repurposed as a display area for family photos. The mirror on top brings height to the room. To the right of the refrigerator is a tall custom-made bookshelf for magazines, photo albums and additional photos.
Getting rid of the homemade bookshelf was the hardest part for Whitney Wexler, but she agrees that it was the best idea in the end.
